Functional Medicine

A gestalt approach to healing and wellness

Functional Medicine is a systems biology-based approach that focuses on identifying and addressing the root cause of disease. Each symptom or differential diagnosis may be one of many contributing to an individual’s illness.

-The Institute for Functional Medicine

The Functional Medicine Matrix (paradigm) looks at 7 basic processes, their balance, and how they affect a person’s physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health. These are:

How the person takes things in.

Defense & Repair

Including protection and recovery from all sorts of injury.

How efficient the body is at converting and utilizing nutrients.

How the body efficiently circulates substances.

Biotransformation & Elimination

Maintains a healthy internal environment by the timely processing and excretion of toxins.

Including not just neurological and hormonal communication, but also interpersonal.

Structural Integration

From subcellular structures to the muscles and bones.

Who’s it for?

Most people can benefit from functional medicine evaluation, as even the healthiest of us can often have some fine-tuning that can be done. Dr. Bloch recommends functional medicine for patients with health concerns such as:

  • Hormonal Imbalance. Helping people whose endocrine system has become weakened or imbalanced including thyroid health, adrenal health, and sex-hormone health.
  • Energy, even to the level of mitochondrial health.
  • Gastrointestinal health, including restoration of the microbiome.
  • Detoxification, including searching for environmental toxins which have impacted your health and helping minimize these influences.
  • Cardiometabolic including nutritional and lifestyle approaches to high cholesterol, high blood pressure, obesity, and diabetes.
  • Immune system, restoring and optimizing your ability to fight diseases.

What to expect

Evaluations will resemble a conventional medical evaluation but in more depth. During this evaluation, Dr. Bloch will collect patient information about past medical illnesses, social influences on your disease, prior laboratory studies, etc.

At the end of the first session, there would often be recommendations regarding lifestyle changes (diet and exercise), recommendations for lab testing (some at conventional labs, some at functional medicine labs), and often nutritional supplementation.

Initial process

Intake Form – Aprox. 1 Hour
Evaluation – 1 Hour

A thorough initial functional medicine evaluation can take 2 hours or even longer. However, in an effort to minimize the cost to the patient, we are scheduling initial evaluations for 1 hour while having patients complete a detailed intake form beforehand.
